Gum disease – also known as periodontal disease – is a degenerative condition primarily caused by bacteria found in plaque, which accumulates on the teeth. The bacteria inflames and infects the gum tissues, and when left untreated, can eventually cause the gums to pull away from the teeth. Untreated periodontal disease can result in bone loss, tooth loss, and gum tissue recession. While gum disease is not curable, our dentists work diligently to help treat the condition and keep it under control for our patients.
Periodontal maintenance involves visiting our office on a regular basis – typically once every three months – for a professional cleaning. These treatments include thorough cleanings both above and below the gum line, which remove plaque, tartar and bacteria to prevent the condition from worsening.
Periodontal maintenance is recommended every three months because when biofilm is not removed, the periodontal bacteria begin to flourish within three to twelve weeks. By providing a cleaning at twelve weeks (three months), we are able to remove this bacteria and keep the condition under control.
